The manufacturing craft of Jiangzhou Painting and Decorating is one of the carving and painting  crafts.  Carved painting craft began in the Tang Dynasty and decorating craft formed in the Song Dynasty.

The production technology of Jiangzhou Painting and Decorating is to pile up two or three kinds of colored paints of vermilion, black and yellow layer by layer regularly on the surface of the utensil. After reaching a certain thickness (about 0.3-0.5 mm), carve the pattern with the V-shaped knife. Different color layers can be seen at the edge of the knife, which is entirely different from other carved painting and decorating wares. Because its pattern knife edge shows as the transect level of the cut rhinoceros cortex, it is named carved rhinoceros. At the same time, because most of patterns are fret and cloud hook which are moving freely and vividly, it is called cloud carving since modern times.

The production process of Jiangzhou Painting and Decorating is miscellaneous with strict skill requirements. Craftsmen check each technological process from material selection to base mounting, base graying, painting, drawing, carving and so on. It generally need about 80 ways of coating and more than a month to produce a product.
