Located 8 kilometers south of Wanrong County, Gufeng mountain scenic spot is a tourist attraction, integrating sightseeing, entertainment, go vacationing and religion. It is not only a famous scenic mountain, but also a famous historical mountain. Gufeng Mountain is famous for its isolation from other mountains so it is also known as the "pyramid" of Asia. Besides, the shape of the mountain is the same from four sides, so it is also called Fangshan(square mountain). The word "Gu" in Chinese character can only be used by the supreme rulers of all dynasties, so its name shows the mountain's extraordinary role. The Gufeng Mountain covers an area of 40 square kilometers, plus the area of hills and slopes in front of the mountain, totaling more than 100 square kilometers, with the highest altitude of 1411.2 meters. In history, the sceneries here include "two springs flowing green", "autumn wind of Tang Village", "evening photo of Cypress forest ", "Taodong Chunqing ", "carved rock and snow", " Fayun overlooking", "Fantai Yueye".
The scenery of Gufeng Mountain scenic spot is changeable all the year round. It is full of flowers in spring and summer. At the turn of spring and summer, apricot and pear flowers are like brocade and rosy clouds. In summer, pines cover the sun in thick shade and cicadas are singing which is cool and pleasant. Around mid-autumn, the mountain is really beautiful. In winter, it is cold and snowy with ice flower and jade branches wrapped in silver, just like fairyland.
Gufeng Mountain scenic spot has a profound cultural heritage, which is recorded in history. There are six major events: Emperor Xuanyuan once built a tripod in Gufeng Mountain; Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty Liu Che came to handle matters in Gufeng Mountain; jieziti lived in seclusion and was burned in the mountain; Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu took refuge in the mountain; Emperor Li Shimin of the Tang Dynasty stationed troops in Gufeng mountain, and the love legends of Dong Yong and seventh daughter of the Jade Emperor added a layer of mystery to Gufeng Mountain.
In November 2005, Changzhi Quanchuangke Industry and Trade Co., Ltd. signed a tourism development agreement with the people's Government of Wanrong County, registered and established Wanrong County Gufeng Mountain Scenic Area Development Co., Ltd., which will carry out the overall development of Gufeng Mountain. On July 13, 2006, the municipal development and Reform Commission approved the study report of Gufeng mountain scenic spot in Wanrong County prepared by Heilongjiang Grand Canyon Tourism Planning Service Co., Ltd. and approved the development of the scenic spot. The total investment of the project is 104.9 million yuan, which is divided into two phases. From 2005 to 2010, the investment of the first phase is 42.1 million yuan; from 2013 to 2016, the investment of the second phase is 62.8 million yuan, which adopts the method of developing, constructing and operating at the same time. At present, the first phase of the project has been completed. An ancient temple complex has been built, with Fayun temple and Jinding temple as the main body. A vacation Resort has been built with Nongjiale cave, Longyuan villa and forest, Oxygen bar, ecological garden restaurant and entertainment city and the largest large-scale ski resort in South Shanxi, etc. The scenic area was put into operation in December 2006. In 2007, it was rated as AAA scenic spot by the quality rating committee of Shanxi Provincial Tourism Administration. In 2009, it was approved as provincial forest park by the people's Government of Shanxi Province. In 2011, it was approved as provincial scenic spot by the people's Government of Shanxi Province.
With the development of the national tourism industry and the implementation of the strategy of "invigorating the county through tourism", the number of tourists in the scenic spot is increasing and the demand for tourists is increasing. Some of the original infrastructure projects in the scenic spot are far from meeting the demand of the tourism market. For the above reasons, Gufeng Mountain Scenic Spot Development Co., Ltd. will increase its investment in the second phase of the project from 2013 to 2016. To further improve the service function of the scenic spot, it is proposed to build the tourism highway, slope protection, parking lot and other projects, with a total investment of about 62.8 million yuan, which will be raised by the enterprise itself and supported by the superior.
The construction of these infrastructure projects will greatly improve the service conditions and the overall image of the scenic spot. It is expected that in 2016, the number of tourists will be increased by 100000 on the basis of 500000 in 2012, which will strengthen the sustainable development capacity of the scenic spot, with obvious economic and social benefits.
