          Yuncheng, formerly known as Hedong, is located in the southwest of Shanxi Province, the golden triangle area of the Yellow River in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Henan Province. It is one of the important birthplaces of the Chinese nation and civilization. It is the hometown of the martial saint Guan Gong. Located to the east of the Yellow River, the mother river of the Chinese nation, Yuncheng was also called "Hedong" in ancient times. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), Duke Xian of the Kingdom Jin, made his capital in Jiang (now Jiangxian County) in 669 BC. After the Jin Kingdom was divided into the three Kingdoms of Han, Zhao and Wei, Yuncheng belonged to the Wei Kingdom. At that time, the capital of the Wei Kingdom was located in Anyi (the area around Yuwang township in Xiaxian County today). Later Emperor Qin Shihuang unified China and set up 36 counties.  Yuncheng was named Hedong County, with its capital in Anyi. During a span of more than 2000 years after that, though the capital changed frequently, the name "Hedong" remained. Yuncheng, named after being the city of salt transportation, is the only city in China that is built for salt. In 2000, Yuncheng was promoted from a prefectural region to a city, consisting of 1 district (Yanhu District), 2 county-level cities (Yongji and Hejin) ,10 counties (Ruicheng, Linyi, Wanrong, Xinjiang, Jishan, Wenxi, Xiaxian, Jiangxian, Pinglu, Yuanqu), 12 Provincial Development Zones, 149 villages and towns (Sub district offices), as well as 2172 village committees, and 231 Community residents committees. By the end of 2020, the city's permanent resident population was 4.7745 million, among which the urban population was 2.3525 million, and the urbanization rate was 49.27%, while the rural population was 2,422,000.

          Yanhu District is prosperous because of the salt lake. It was once called Salt Town, Kucheng Town, Lucun Town, Shenghui Town, Fenghuang City and so on. It was named after the Salt Lake. Since the Song and Yuan Dynasties, it has set up a salt transportation envoy, then built a city for the transportation department named Yuncheng. It was named Yuncheng County in 1958, Yuncheng City in 1983, Yanhu District in 2000 after Yuncheng was changed from a region to a city. Covering an area of 1,237 square kilometers, Yanhu district now has jurisdiction over 6 townships, 7 towns, 8 streets, 233 administrative villages, 76 communities, with a total population of 710,000 from 14 ethnic groups, including Han, Hui, Miao, Korean and Tujia.

          Yongji City, with ancient names Puban and Zhiyi, once the capital of Shun, is located in the core area of the golden triangle of the Yellow River in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Henan. It is the "South Gate" of Shanxi. It is adjacent to the "Mother River" in the west, Zhongtiao Mountain in the south, Emei Mountain in the north, the central Wuxing Lake and Sushui River in the north. With a total land area of 1208 square kilometers, the city has jurisdiction over 7 towns, 3 streets, 195 administrative villages and 22 communities, with a population of 464,000.

          Hejin, known as Jiangzhou Longmen in ancient times, is located in the southwest of Shanxi Province, the northwest corner of Yuncheng City, and the triangular area where Fen River and Yellow River converge. It is adjacent to Jishan County to the east, facing Hancheng City of Shaanxi Province across the Yellow River to the west, adjoining Wanrong County to the south with terraces, and bordering Xiangning County of Linfen City to the north with Luliang Mountain. Hejin has jurisdiction over 4 streets, 3 towns and 2 townships: Cheng District Street, Qingjian Street, Zhaojiazhuang Street, Yangcun Street, Fancun Town, Sanghlou Town, Chaijia Town, Xiahua Township and Xiaoliang Township; there are 14 communities and 125 administrative villages.

          Linyi County, anciently called Xunyang, consists of Linjin County and Yishi County. It is located in Yuncheng Basin in the southwest of Shanxi Province, with Yellow River to the west, Taiyue to the East, Emei Mountain to the north and Zhongtiao Mountain to the south. It is the only County with no hills or mountains in Shanxi Province. With a total area of 1339.32 square kilometers, it has jurisdiction over 10 towns, 4 townships, 272 administrative villages and a permanent population of 600,000.

          Wanrong County is located in the southwest of Shanxi Province, in the northwest of Yuncheng City. The county has a land area of 1081.5 square kilometers and it has jurisdiction over 6 towns, 8 townships, 207 administrative villages, and a total population of 459,000. The name of the county has the meaning of striving for glory and prosperity in all things. Within its domain, the county possesses a pleasant environment, rich agricultural resources, prosperous industry and commerce and also a profound cultural heritage. It is recorded that Nine Emperors in history successively offered sacrifices in Houtu temple a total of 24 times, among which the Hanwu emperor offered here 7 times and left the eternal masterpiece "Qiu Feng Ci".

           

          Jishan County is located in the southwest of Shanxi Province, at the north end of Yuncheng City. It is the birthplace of the Chinese nation's farming civilization. When general Secretary Xi Jinping inspected Shanxi in 2017, he said, "Hou Ji cultivates and teaches people how to grow crops in Jishan ." it is named after the JiWang mountain.           Xinjiang County, formerly known as Jiangzhou, is located in the southwest of Shanxi Province, and the north end of Yuncheng City, with Lüliang Mountain to the north, Emei Mountain to the south, and the Fenhe and Huihe Rivers crossing the border. The total area of the county is 597.18 square kilometers, 527,500 mu of cultivated land, 9 towns, 153 administrative villages, 10 urban residentscommittees, with a total population of 348000.  In 1994, Xinjiang was listed in the third batch of national historical and cultural cities, and was successively rated as the national cultural advanced county, the township of drum music, the capital of Chengni inkstone, the township of folk art, the best couplet culture County, the national agricultural product quality and safety County, the national food Safety Demonstration County, the national pollution-free vegetable production base, the national agricultural product quality and safety demonstration county, the main agricultural production mechanization Demonstration County, provincial agricultural production trusteeship service pilot county, and the provincial civilized county and provincial hygiene county.
